Constructed over the Logone River, the Ngueli Bridge represents the Cameroon-Chad border in Kousseri This bridge is Chad’s main supply route since it leads right to Ndjamena the capital. Commercial activities between Cameroon and Chad as well as other African countries like Nigeria, South and Northern Soudan has been through this bridge. Thousands of people from both countries passes here every day to buy goods and services which they do not find at home.
The permanent movement of people on both sides of this bridge, causes interaction between the population of both countries who exchanges courtesies and greetings, before embarking on endless haggling over consumer products and capital goods.
The flow of bridge users is incessant, long queues of trucks laden with goods also wait for their turn to cross the border.
Here, pedestrians pass without any difficulty usually on presentation of identification papers; others hasten behind carts drivers to carry their goods. Systematic searches are carried out on any packaging, big or small from both sides of the bridge.
However, since the outbreak of the Corona-Virus pandemic, things had to change as the border was closed in March 2020 for health reasons on both sides of the countries.
Consumer goods became expensive as traders could not cross the border to buy from wholesalers. Many shops in the Kousseri market were shut down, petty trading activities which young girls and middle-aged women were doing like the buying and selling of fruits had to stop. The economy of both countries dropped.
Again, before the health crisis, this border was Cameroon’s second customs revenue after the Douala Sea port.
To remedy to this difficult situation, Chadian minister of public security and immigration, general Souleyman Abakar Adam, announced on June 17 2021 they had open their side of the Ngueli bridge to allow smooth commercial and human transport as they believe that the health and security conditions have change. Even though the Cameroon side was still close because the Chadian decision to reopen was a unilateral decision that did not implicate Cameroon as well, Cameroon officially reopened hers on June 20, 2021 for circulation.
A decision that is still saluted by various traders who ask nothing but just to go back to their daily activities.
